5 Food Puzzles Every Dog Should Own in 2026

Food puzzles are one of the simplest and most effective ways to support a dog’s mental health. :)
They slow meals down, encourage natural problem-solving, reduce boredom, and help our dogs feel calmer and more fulfilled. And unlike training tools, they work quietly in the background of everyday life.
If I were starting from scratch in 2026, these are the five food puzzles I would recommend every dog should have access to, whether you’re raising a puppy, supporting an anxious dog, or just looking to add more enrichment to your routine.
Why Food Puzzles Matter
Dogs were not designed to eat all of their food out of a bowl in under a minute, all in one go. Let's consider how much more dogs can get out of feeding time by using food puzzles!
The Benefits of Food Puzzles
They encourage natural foraging behaviours.
They slow down fast eaters (much more than slow feeders).
They provide mental stimulation without over-arousal.
They help dogs settle and decompress, adding structure to the day without pressure.
Do note that dogs do not need to have access to dozens of puzzles. You only need a small, thoughtful rotation that matches your dog’s ability level, comfort, and emotional state.

This is one of those food puzzles that I might recommend leaving out for your dog to let you know that they're good and ready for some enrichment fun. You can use the button as a cue from your dog that they're hungry or that they feel like engaging with you.
You can always take a break from it by putting the puzzle away and hiding some treats in it for next time!
This food puzzle will give your dog's arms quite the workout!
As they will have to move every piece along, in the hopes that their nose leads them to the right location.
Given its difficulty, we do recommend starting with a good number of treats placed inside the tray when you're setting it up. This way, you can encourage your dog by helping them find the pieces you've hidden and avoid feeling frustrated early on.
This food puzzle might not be the most difficult one we have, but it makes for a great introduction to puzzles and mental enrichment. Your dog will still be required to nudge, paw, and sniff in search of every treat you've hidden in the different levels.
Just like with most puzzles, the fewer food/treat pieces you have your dog work for at a time, the better. That way, their success is based on their skill set, rather than a high probability of multiple pieces being everywhere.
This is one of my favourite puzzles to throw inside the freezer with some treats, or even banana or apple puree.
It's not the most challenging for a seasoned puzzle pooch, but it's still great for them to have to search for different kinds of treats. The less you put inside, the more they need to search!
This puzzle's level of difficulty is one you can play around with and make it super easy for your pooch to start.
At its highest difficulty, lock as many of the white pieces as you want, and your dog will need to first unlock them in order to move the green pieces with their paw or nose to get to the piece.
The unlocking mechanism will put your dog's brain to the test, as not every dog will have enough strength in their paw to pull on them to unlock. You can semi-lock each piece for easier pulling.
How to Use Food Puzzles Successfully
More is not necessarily better. Variety and timing matter more than quantity. Selecting the right food puzzle for the right moment in your dog's day will get the most out of it!
A Few Extra Tips
Rotate puzzles rather than using the same one daily (unless your dog only seems comfortable using one; work your way towards others).
Match puzzle difficulty to your dog’s emotional state.
Avoid puzzles when your dog is already overstimulated.
Use puzzles as part of routines, not random distractions.
Food puzzles should support calm, not replace connection or walks.
