If I Could Only Buy One Dog Food Puzzle

If I could only buy one food puzzle for my dog, it would be the Nina Ottosson Twister food puzzle. Not because it’s the easiest, and not because most dogs will figure it out right away, but because of the exact opposite.

And that’s what makes it so valuable.

Why I would choose something difficult

Most dogs won’t be able to solve this puzzle on their first or second try, and that’s completely fine. In fact, that’s where the opportunity is.

The more challenging a puzzle is, the more room we have to step in, guide, adjust, and help our dogs learn how to approach it. Instead of expecting them to just “figure it out,” we get to be part of that process with them.

That’s where the real enrichment happens.

It’s not just about the dog getting the food. It’s about the thinking, the trial and error, the small wins, and the gradual understanding that builds over time.

That can look like opening a few compartments to get them started, moving pieces slightly, or even just touching the puzzle and observing how they respond. Sometimes it’s as simple as acknowledging curiosity and reinforcing those first small attempts, especially with dogs that are a bit more unsure or hesitant.

You can also guide them away from the puzzle and then bring them back to it.

That might seem like a small thing, but it teaches something really important.

It shows them that they can step away from something exciting and come back to it in a calm and mindful way, without frustration, pressure, or urgency.

It turns the activity into something flexible instead of something they feel stuck in or fixated.

And throughout all of this, you’re right there with them, helping them stay engaged, helping them understand, and making sure the experience stays positive.

The common mistake most people make

A lot of people think the goal of a food puzzle is for the dog to figure it out completely on their own. But that’s not always the best experience for the dog.

There’s nothing more frustrating than wanting something and not being able to access it, especially when you don’t fully understand how. If a puzzle is too difficult and the dog doesn’t have support, they can become disengaged, overwhelmed, or simply lose interest altogether.

That’s why I don’t expect a dog to do something I’m not confident they can handle, especially without guidance. The goal isn’t independence right away, the goal is understanding first.

On the other side of things, when a puzzle is too easy, it tends to become something the dog just completes rather than something they actually engage with, and the distinction is incredibly important.

They might get through it quickly, but they’re not really thinking, problem-solving, or learning much from it. And more often than not, the pet parent doesn’t feel the need to be involved either..

That’s where a big opportunity gets missed.

Participating in these activities matters. It helps your dog understand that really good things happen when you’re involved together. That shared experience can go a long way, not just for engagement, but also for things like preventing resource guarding, because your presence becomes part of the positive experience, not something they feel they need to protect from.

It also gives you control over the intensity of the activity. You can slow things down, help them take breaks, guide them away and back, and keep the experience coachable.

With easier puzzles, you often have to get creative to make them more challenging over time. With a more difficult puzzle, you don’t have to do that (at least not right away!). You simply make it easier at the start and gradually allow it to become more challenging as your dog builds skill and confidence.

And eventually, you get to watch them figure it out.

Every dog can benefit from this kind of enrichment.

High energy dogs, lower energy dogs, puppies, older dogs, confident dogs, and even dogs that are more unsure or sensitive. They all have the ability to learn, to think, and to problem-solve.

But if you are going to include a puzzle as part of your routine, then choosing one that gives you room to guide, adjust, and grow with your dog will always be more valuable in the long run.
